David Evans, Carbon Accounting Modeler, Says It’s a Scam

Dr David Evans’ address to the Anti-Carbon-Tax rally, Perth Australia, 23 March 2011

Good Morning Ladies and Gentlemen.

The debate about global warming has reached ridiculous proportions and is full of micro thin half-truths and misunderstandings. I am a scientist who was on the carbon gravy train, understands the evidence,  was once an alarmist, but am now a skeptic. Watching this issue unfold has been amusing but, lately, worrying. This issue is tearing society apart, making fools and liars out of our politicians.

William Allen writes letter to Justices that declared CO2 a pollutant.

Included in the letter is the NASA temperature graphs showing no warming, to the 5 liberal justices that voted to designate CO2 a pollutant.

The decision in Mass. v. EPA would indicate that a majority are scientific agnostics. With a minimal understanding of the scientific principle members would understand that if increasing CO2 caused a significant increase in temperature, then one would never observe temperature decreasing while CO2 was increasing as is shown in the graph below!

The graph above is derived from observed temperature data from the University of Alabama Huntsville in blue and the Climate Research Unit (CRU) in England that was recently envolved in what is described as "Climate Gate".     Since the hard data shows cooling temperature over almost a 9 year time span, while CO2, in green, continues to rise, it is clear that CO2 does not, in any significant way cause temperature to rise. Moreover, since CO2 is required for life to exist on this planet, it cannot be a pollutant. Plant life is now more robust than at any time in modern history, due to the higher level of CO2 that exists today!

"The harms associated with climate change are serious and well recognized. Indeed, the NRC Report itself—which EPA regards as an “objective and independent assessment of the relevant science,” 68 Fed. Reg. 52930—identifies a number of environmental changes that have already inflicted significant harms, including “the global retreat of mountain glaciers, reduction in snow-cover extent, the earlier spring melting of rivers and lakes, [and] the accelerated rate of rise of sea levels during the 20th century relative to the past few thousand years … .” NRC Report 16."

The statement above from the opinion, in no way demonstrates that CO2 has caused the environmental changes listed. Are you aware that the ice extent in Antarctica is over 20% greater than it was when satellites went up in 1980 to take measurements?  Are you aware that 1934 is the hottest year on record in the US and that three other years in the 30s are in the top 10?

Are you aware that temperature cooled from about 1940 to the mid to late 70s and there was a so called "concensus" that the earth was headed into another ice age?  Are you aware that during the Medieval Warm Period the Vikings discovered an island that they named "Greenland" and colonies where settled there, but the remnants of those settlements are now under permafrost!  During this time they were growing grapes in Scotland, where they cannot today because it is too cold?

Depending on what actions the EPA decides to take, your decision in Mass. v. EPA may have opened the gates to hell for our economy and way of life in this country.  The EU adopted a form of cap and trade several years ago as part of the kyoto treaty and their economy has suffered greatly from it, electric rates in Germany went up 35% in one year, but CO2 emissions have not decreased!  However, it is not all bad, Al Gore has made $millions trading carbon credits.

One final point, China is now the leading emitter of CO2 and by 2030 is now projected to emit as much CO2 as the entire world emits today, including the US.  Of course there is India, with over a billion folks and both countries have made it crystal clear that they will not worrry about CO2 emissions, but focus on expanding and improving their economies; China needs to create 25 million jobs a year!

A group has decided to challenge the EPA's endangerment finding for CO2.  The American people can only hope that real science and real facts play a more prominent role in the judicial process this time around.
